Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about how NeedETA works, where our data comes from, how to read your results, and how we protect your privacy.

Is NeedETA free?

Yes. The NeedETA eligibility checker and all nine travel calculators are completely free to use, with no account, signup, or payment required. We have no plans to charge travelers for these tools. See our service fees page for full transparency on what is free and what independent partners may charge for.

Is NeedETA a government site?

No. NeedETA is an independent, privately operated informational tool. We are not a government website and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any government, embassy, or immigration authority. Always submit official applications through official government channels. Read our government disclaimer for the full statement.

Where does the data come from?

Our eligibility guidance is built on publicly available information from official government sources, including travel.state.gov (U.S. Department of State), gov.uk (UK Foreign Travel Advice), and travel.gc.ca (Government of Canada). Data is refreshed regularly through automated checks.

How accurate is it?

We work to keep our data current and correct, but visa and entry policies can change without notice. NeedETA results are a strong starting point for planning, not a guarantee. Always confirm the final requirements with the official government source before you book or travel.

What is the difference between visa-free, ETA, eVisa, ETIAS, and visa-required?

Visa-free means you can enter without applying in advance. An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a quick online pre-screening linked to your passport. An eVisa is a visa applied for and issued online. ETIAS is the EU travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen area, expected to be required from 2026. Visa-required means you must obtain a visa, often through an embassy or consulate, before travel.

Do you store my data?

The eligibility checker runs in your browser and does not require you to create an account. We use privacy-respecting analytics (Google Analytics 4 with Consent Mode and Microsoft Clarity) to understand usage. A small amount of local storage holds your language and cookie-consent preferences. See our privacy and cookie policies for details.

What languages are supported?

NeedETA is available in 30 languages so travelers worldwide can read entry requirements in their own language. Your language choice is saved locally so the site remembers it on your next visit.

What do I do if results differ from the embassy?

Always follow the official source. If a NeedETA result differs from what an embassy, consulate, or official government portal tells you, the official authority is correct and takes precedence. Visa rules can change between our data refreshes, so verify with the official channel before booking or traveling.
